Social Stories for the Holidays

In our last blog post we talked about using a visual schedule to prepare your child for the holidays. Sometimes you need to go into detail when it comes to preparing your child for a new experience. Social Stories come in handy for times like this. You can easily make your own according to what your holiday plans are like with your child. At 6:57 minutes of this video, you can learn how to make a social story. We have done a few examples here for you!

It would be good to prepare a social story for each new activity planned before the holidays begin. This is so that you'll have your social stories ready when the time comes. Remember to include every step of the activity in the story with relevant pictures to describe each. Social Stories are always personalized, so the child is always the main character in the story. Read the story with your child before doing the activity. This gives your child time to register a new activity and prepare himself/ herself mentally for the task ahead.

School Calendar

We also talked about the use of a visual calendar in the previous blog post. Another way you can use this is by preparing your child for the coming new year of school. When it is nearing the end of the holidays, it would be a good idea to count down the days till school starts with your child. This helps them anticipate an exciting new year ahead as well as to have a better sense of time.
