All About Toileting!

In the month of August, our team at EAP Malaysia would like to focus on toileting. So many areas come to mind when we think about teaching a child to use the toilet. Does he or she have any resistance to going into the toilet? What about the routine of going to the toilet? When do we teach a child about privacy and needing to close the toilet door? But my child is a boy and he needs to learn to stand to pee but to sit to poop? What about public toilets and recognizing the gender signage outside? Most of all, how do we teach them to communicate needing to use the toilet?

  Toileting

Well we hope to cover all these questions this month through our different blog posts. While there are different methods to teaching a child to use the toilet, there is a recommended order to this process.

Firstly we need to determine if our child is ready to be toilet trained. Secondly, are there any rigidities/tolerance issues and in which areas? For example, some children may refuse to enter the bathroom or may insist in removing all their clothes before using the toilet. Thirdly, preparing the routine of using the toilet (Tip: teaching this consistently will speed up the learning process). Next there are 2 main strategies we use to toilet-train a child: 1) Habit Training or 2) The Big Day/Week. Lastly we need to teach a child to generalize this skill with other family members and in the community.

So do stay tuned to our blog for weekly updates and please do not hesitate to email us at autismmalaysia@gmail.com or contact us by telephone at 03-2094 0421 if you have any enquiries or would like further training in this area.
