Preparing Your Child for School (Part 2)

Starting school is an important step in your child's life. As a parent or caregiver, you play an important role in your child's academic achievement. It is necessary to take the right steps when getting involved in your child's education. There are many things that you can do at home to prepare your child for school.

What can I do to ensure a smooth transition at school for my child?

1. Prepare a Social Story about school
    - Include pictures of school, teachers, classmates and all the rooms
    - Video modelling and role play (e.g. role model to the child how to greet teachers and friends at school - "Good morning Bryan". "Good Morning Mrs Jones".)

2. Visit the school
    - Classroom
    - Toilet
    - Playground
    - Lunch Area
    - Library

3. Allow your child to practice carrying their backpack, lunch box, and wearing their school uniform

4. Teach child about boundaries; realize proximity when playing with friends and talking to teachers

5. Have a school rule card prepared so your child knows what is expected of them while at school (e.g. look at teacher, have nice hands, feet on floor, share your toys, and take turns)
